Stonnington Volunteer Awards

Our annual Stonnington Volunteer Awards celebrate people and community groups whose commitment to volunteering makes a difference to our local community, positively impacts the lives of others and makes the City of Stonnington a better place to live.


Nominations for the 2024 Stonnington Volunteer Awards are now closed. Entries closed at 5 pm on Friday 5 July 2024.

The awards will be presented at an event in September 2024.

Nominations may be made for the following award categories:

  • Arts and Culture
  • Community Group
  • Community Service
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Sport
  • Young Person.

The Mayoral Award will be selected from the nominations received in the above categories.


Nominees do not need to live in the City of Stonnington but must have made a substantial contribution to the Stonnington community through their volunteering.

Community Groups must be an active group within the City of Stonnington with at least four members.

Nominees for the Young Person award must be aged under 26 years on 5 July 2024.  Individuals under the age of 18 years must ensure they have permission from a parent and or legal guardian before accepting their nomination.

Individuals cannot self-nominate to receive a Volunteer Award. Volunteers working with (but not employed by) community groups can self-nominate in the Community Group category only.

Current serving Councillors, council staff members and contractors are not eligible to be considered for these awards.

Assessment criteria

The Volunteer Awards recognise people who have made an outstanding achievement or contribution towards our community through their hard work and dedication to volunteering.

Eligible applications will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • the volunteering contribution during the past 12 months and/or consistently over the span of several years
  • how the volunteer has shown their commitment to the community they are serving
  • how the volunteer has made a positive impact on the lives of others in Stonnington
  • how this volunteer's contribution stands out compared with others.

Nominations must include the contact details of someone who is familiar with the achievements, contributions or volunteering of the nominee who can act as a referee. The nominator and referee cannot be the same person.

Applications can be supported or strengthened by including attachments such as photographs, media or promotional materials (a maximum of three - this is optional). 

Selection process

  • nominations will be considered by an evaluation panel consisting of Councillors and prior winners of the awards
  • winners will be selected by panel consensus
  • the panel may choose not to award in a particular category if a winner cannot be selected (due to lack of nominations or merit of nomination.

The awards will be presented at the Volunteer Awards ceremony on Thursday, 19 September 2024. This event is open to all award nominees and their families.

Terms and conditions of entry

  • the Volunteer Awards is being run and managed by the City of Stonnington, 311 Glenferrie Road, Malvern, Victoria 3144
  • nominations must be submitted through the online application form (or paper version) as provided by the City of Stonnington
  • all submitted nominations are deemed acceptance of these terms and conditions of entry
  • one group/individual nomination will be accepted per form
  • entries open at 9am on Friday 24 May 2024 and all entries must be received by no later than 5pm Friday, 5 July 2024
  • individuals or individuals acting on behalf of organisations may submit nominations
  • individuals cannot self-nominate to receive a Volunteer Award. Volunteers working with (but not employed by) community groups can self-nominate in the Community Group category only
  • winners will be awarded in the following categories: Arts and Culture, Community Group, Community Service, Environment Sustainability, Sport, Young Person and Mayoral Award.
  • all nomination information and material submitted is handled in accordance with the City of Stonnington Information Privacy Policy. City of Stonnington is committed to compliance with its obligations under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic). All personal information (including images) collected by the nominee will be used for Council business purposes and kept confidential, except as permitted in the above terms and conditions of entry. These details will not be disclosed to third parties unless the Council is required to disclose the information under other legislation or disclosure is necessary to complete the purpose for which it is sought. Copies of the Council’s Information Privacy and Data Protection Policy, together with details of how you may contact Council, are located on the City of Stonnington website.
  • all enquiries and submitted information in regard to the awards are to remain confidential (with the exception of winners) unless permission is obtained by the City of Stonnington
  • individuals or groups who are nominated may be considered for a category other than the one they are nominated in at the discretion of the evaluation panel
  • nominees, nominators or referees may be contacted for further information by City of Stonnington staff
  • Council will notify all nominees of their nomination within two weeks of receiving a nomination. At this time, nominees will receive a copy of their official nomination form, including the names of their nominator and referee. Nominees will be requested to confirm they are willing to accept the nomination. The nominee’s confirmation or acceptance of their nomination will be taken as an acceptance of these terms and conditions of entry.
  • Council may conduct a background check for all nominees, nominators or referees
  • Council may, at their discretion, disqualify any nominee where there has been a breach of this terms and conditions of entry, the nominee’s background check is found to be unfavourable, or in instances of the nominee’s unlawful or improper misconduct
  • the decision and the selection process in relation to the awards is final, and the City of Stonnington and the evaluation panel are not required, at any time, to justify, defend or otherwise correspond regarding the decision-making process
  • Council may, at any time, at is discretion, modify these terms and conditions, including the Privacy Policy, with notice. Any such modification will be effective immediately upon Council publishing revised versions of the terms and conditions of entry and Privacy Policy on its website dated accordingly. Continued participation following any such modification constitutes your acceptance of the modified terms and conditions.
