Domestic Animal Management Plan

The Domestic Animal Management Plan guides our animal management services for the next four years.

It outlines how we will:

  • manage dogs and cats in our community
  • promote responsible pet ownership
  • support safe and respectful use of public spaces between pet owners, pets and non-pet owners.

The Plan recognises the significant role of pets as companions, and their positive contribution to people’s wellbeing. It recognises the importance of an environment that balances how people and pets share streets, homes and public spaces. 

The Domestic Animal Management Plan addresses Council’s obligations around the management of cats and dogs under the Domestic Animals Act 1994.

It outlines our approach to:

  • encouraging responsible pet ownership
  • supporting pet registration and identification
  • minimising nuisance to the public posed by dogs and cats
  • reducing the risk of dog attacks and aggression
  • managing dangerous/menacing/restricted breed dogs
  • encouraging desexing and reducing overpopulation and impoundment
  • minimising euthanasia of lost and impounded animals
  • monitoring domestic animal businesses
  • training authorised officers
  • ensuring safe shared use of public spaces
  • planning for pets in times of emergency.
