Light Insights Trial

News article image.jpg

In 2026, we’re partnering with the Traffic Accident Commission to run a smart bike light trial that uses award-winning See.Sense bike lights and data technology to capture data on bike riding experiences in Stonnington.

To run the trial, we’re looking for people who regularly bike ride in or through Stonnington to use the smart bike light for 12 months.

The smart bike light, attached to your bike frame, instantly captures ride data such as swerving, braking, the road surface and cycling routes. Using a smart phone app, participants can also log information such as near-miss locations.

What we learn will help us understand bike rider experiences across different roads, paths and infrastructure in Stonnington, particularly:

  • where people ride most
  • safety hotspots and near-miss locations
  • road surface conditions
  • intersections and routes that need improvement

These insights will inform future planning and upgrades to our bike network.

Why get involved?

This will be our first ever smart bike light trial and being involved is easy and rewarding! You’ll not only directly contribute to improving bike riding in Stonnington, you’ll also:

  • receive a FREE See.Sense ICON3 rear smart light (retails for $240)
  • have access to monthly personalised ride summaries.

You also get to keep the smart light which has added layer of safety where the light flashes brighter and faster at riskier locations such as at roundabouts and road intersections.

Your commitment to the trial

If selected as a smart bike light trial participant, you will be asked to:

  1. pay $20 postage for the smart bike light
  2. charge the light fully before attaching it to the frame of your bike
  3. download the See.Sense app to your smartphone then join the project and enable ride recording permissions
  4. ride as normal, with the light on and the app running in the background
  5. share feedback in the app about issues encountered on your rides.

How to apply

To be part of the trial fill out the application form by 5pm Monday 23 February 2026.
