Melbourne Water is working with local councils to update flood information across Greater Melbourne.
This helps to better understand the risk of current and future flooding, and plan for safe and resilient cities for today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
Melbourne Water reviews flood models every five years and updates them every 10 years. Major floods or significant changes in the catchment may also trigger a review of their flood models.
Why undertake the review?
Flood maps provide information that helps the Victorian Government, councils, emergency services and communities to:
- prepare for floods and minimise their impacts
- ensure new development is built to withstand floods, and away from high-risk locations, and
- prioritise upgrades to flood infrastructure in high-risk areas.
As our city becomes more densely developed, rainwater also flows faster off hard surfaces like concrete, instead of filtering into soils. This can increase flooding along waterways and low-lying land.
When will the review occur?
The review will be managed by Melbourne Water, who will advise affected properties when timing has been finalised.
How can I find out more?
We will update this page as more information becomes available.
