Drainage and storm water issues

The owner of the drain is responsible for its ongoing management and maintenance.

Stormwater drains can be owned by:

  • City of Stonnington

  • Department of Transport and Planning (VicRoads)

  • Melbourne Water

  • Private property owners (such as internal stormwater drains and any section of their private drain outside the property that connects to the legal point of discharge)

If you have an issue with a drain or pit lid owned by the City of Stonnington, we may be able to help.

Other water issues

Flooding or drainage issues with a neighbouring property

For issues on your private property or neighbouring properties, we recommend speaking to your neighbour or contacting a plumber to try and resolve the issue first.

If the issues are not resolved, you can:

  • contact the Dispute Settlement Centre Victoria (DSCV) for advice and requesting mediation

  • apply to the Victorian Civil Administration Tribunal (VCAT), who can take action to address unreasonable flow of water between properties

  • seek independent legal advice about civil actions available under the Water Act.

Burst water mains and pipes

If there are issues coming from a damaged water main, such as a leaked pipe on roads, please report these issues directly to the appropriate water authority:

A leaked water main or pipe can be identified if you see that the ground is overflowing with water even when it has not been raining. If it has been raining and there is overflowing of water, you can report it to us as a blocked drains issue.

Something that needs cleaning in a waterway

Not all bodies of water in parks are managed by the City of Stonnington. We can only assist with cleaning ornamental ponds within parks.

If your issue is in larger bodies of water, such as with Gardiners Creek, Scotchmans Creek or the Yarra River, please contact Melbourne Water on 131 722 to help resolve your issue.
