Manage trees on private property

If your property is located in a Residential Zone, you may need a planning permit to remove, destroy or lop a tree – even if the land is not affected by any overlays. You may need a Tree Works Permit to carry out works within the vicinity of a significant tree on your property.

We do not manage trees located on private property. If you have a concern with a tree on your property or a neighbouring property, find information about your rights on the Dispute Settlement of Victoria website.

If a tree or branch is causing a public safety concern, such as obstructing a footpath, please call us. For urgent help with trees or branches on private properties, call the State Emergency Service on 132 500. 

For significant trees that need urgent removal or pruning, a qualified arborist must assess the tree before you call us for approval. You must email their assessment to Council to apply for a Tree Works Permit.
