Community safety in Chapel Street
Chapel Street is one of Melbourne's iconic precincts. With great retail, dining, and entertainment options, it's popular with locals and tourists.
After extensive community consultation, we are working to enhance safety, amenity and revitalisation in the Chapel Street precinct.
What we are doing
- Advocacy – Advocating for place-based investment for areas like the Chapel Street precinct and the Prahran Town Hall cultural and creative hub
- Events and activations – Council-hosted public events and activations in Prahran Square to encourage positive use of the space
- Salvation Army Pink Car program – The Pink Car checks in with women to see if they need support, and make sure they get home safely. It operates in the Chapel Street entertainment precinct from 9:30 pm to 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights
- Stonnington Liquor Forum – Collaboration with Victoria Police and Liquor Control Victoria to address safety issues around alcohol-related harm, patron behaviour, and issues that affect licensed premises.
- Stonnington Zero – Homelessness and housing support led by Launch Housing
What we are going to do
We endorsed our Chapel Street Precinct Improvement Plan at our April Council meeting.
It details our plan to uplift the iconic entertainment strip. This includes how we will support thriving business, reduce harm, increase capable guardianship, and work with our partners to pave the way for a new era of Chapel Street.
- Cleaning and graffiti – Increased after-hours cleaning and graffiti removal
- Design initiatives – Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) reviews of public spaces.
- Good Night Out – Community initiative which aims to support night-time safety
- Joint patrols with Victoria Police – Patrolling the Chapel Street precinct to enhance safety and enforcement
- Public space and infrastructure – Refreshing and upgrading
