Environmental sensors

We have started implementing environmental data sensors at key locations around Stonnington. This is part of our plan to collect data on our environment – a key pillar of our Smart City Strategy Framework.

The Sustainability team led a project to install soil moisture and tree growth sensors, as part of a passive irrigation trial. This is in addition to installing air quality, temperature and humidity sensors.

The Public Health team are deploying a noise monitoring sensor in response to noise nuisance enquiries from residents.

What are air quality sensors?

Air quality sensors provide us with important information about our environment, such as:

  • temperature
  • humidity
  • particles in the air.

What are the soil moisture and tree growth sensors?

These give us real-time information on the moisture in the ground and the tree growth progress.

What are noise monitoring sensors?

Noise monitoring sensors collecting data on ambient noise.

About the trial

We're trialling the use of weather station sensors in some locations. We aim to find patterns and learn about the relationship between air quality and environmental factors, such as traffic volumes. The data will help us determine how we to use air quality sensors in other areas of the City.

We installed soil moisture and tree growth sensors as part of efforts to capture storm water runoffs.

Where are the sensors located?

The air quality sensors are currently located at:

  • Windsor Station, Prahran
  • The Jam Factory, South Yarra
  • Central Park, Malvern East.

The soil moisture and tree growth sensors are installed at two locations on Irving Street, Malvern.

The noise monitoring sensor is a portable device and is deployed at locations of interest.

Benefits for the community

Collecting and analysing quality environmental data is important in reducing the impact of climate change. Our community has told us this is a vital part of planning for the future.

Understanding more about our environment can allow us to make smarter decisions on infrastructure, asset management, planning public spaces and health. It will also help us understand how we are meeting our sustainability goals.
