Road occupation permit

We are currently experiencing an unusually high volume of permit requests. There may be a delay in the response to your call or permit request.

You need a road occupation permit if you plan to occupy Council land for any of the following:

  • construction works
  • using a concrete pump
  • storing building materials, plants, equipment, site sheds or machinery
  • using a mobile crane or travel tower (if a crane overhangs or encroaches above a property not related to your works, you need written consent from the airspace owner).

How to apply

To apply for a road occupation permit you need to provide the following:

  • Detailed and compliant Traffic Management Plan (TMP) or Traffic Guidance Scheme (TGS), outlining how you will safely manage the works, and how you will place, erect and dismantle traffic management devices and signage.
  • VicRoads Memorandum of Authorisation (if works are on a designated VicRoads road). Download our list of arterial roads in Stonnington(PDF, 28KB)
  • Detailed traffic management plan
  • Copy of certificate of currency for public liability insurance (minimum $20 million)
  • Payment of the permit fee.

Once logged in:

  • select ‘All applications and permits' under Apply for something
  • find ‘Construction Permits’ and select ‘Start’
  • select ‘Road Occupation Permit’ in the drop-down
  • follow the prompts.

Time

We need a minimum of 10 days to assess applications.

If we need to make further internal referrals, we will need longer than 10 days.

Cost

  • Concrete works and work area: $340 per day
  • Cranes and lifting devices: $340 per day
  • Storage of materials – occupation: $55 per square metre per week
  • Storage of materials: $340 application fee
  • Fast track: $116.40 application fee (subject to approval / eligibility)
