State Government planning changes
The State Government of Victoria is introducing major changes to planning which will have a significant effect on many neighbourhoods.
In September 2023, the government released its Housing Statement. This introduced a suite of initiatives intended to increase housing supply and affordability in Victoria. It focuses on the delivery of 80,000 homes per year for the first decade, with a total of 1.6 million homes in Victoria by 2051.
On 28 February 2025, Plan for Victoria, a state-wide long-term plan for Victoria was developed and released by the State Government. The aim of the plan is to deliver more homes, more jobs and great communities.
It directs urban growth in and around activity centres and train stations in Melbourne, particularly in inner and middle suburbs and sets housing targets for each municipality.
It sets a target of 50,000 new dwellings in Stonnington by 2051.
