COVID-19 update for attending a Maternal and Child Health Centre
Our Maternal and Child Health Service (MCH) will continue to provide face-to-face MCH services for infants aged 0-8 weeks for each of the Key Age and Stage visits.
If your child is over 8 weeks of age, your appointment will be offered as a phone consultation in combination with a short face-to-face appointment at your MCH centre to complete physical and developmental assessments.
In line with COVID-19 guidelines, only one parent can attend the appointment with your child.
If you, or any of your immediate contacts are feeling unwell, are awaiting COVID-19 test results or have visited any of the COVID-19 hotspots listed on the Coronavirus website, please call MCH administration on 8290 3336 to arrange a phone consultatin or to reschedule your face-to-face appointment.
If you or your child is unwell, or if you have experienced a fever, cough, chills or sweats, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose or loss of sense of smell please contact the MCH administration to reschedule your appointment.
All support groups will be held online via Zoom in line with Government restrictions. This includes:
- All parent groups. The participants will be contacted by the MCH Nurse with the details.
- Small talk.
- Mother Goose.
Before you attend
If you answer yes to any of the following questions, please do not attend in-person.
Please contact Maternal Child Health on 8290 3336 to arrange for your consultation to be conducted over the phone or to reschedule your consultation.
- Are you or a family member unwell?
- Are you or a close contact awaiting Covid results?
- Are you or a close contact in mandatory home quarantine?
- Have you or a family member been in contact with anyone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19?
- Have you been at any of the hot spots listed on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Coronavirus website?
- Have you or any of your close contacts returned from overseas travel?
Maternal and Child Health clients will be required to wear masks prior to entry into the centres (children 12 and under are not required to wear a face covering).
The following measures have been put in place to ensure to safety of you and your family:
- You must sanitise your hands when entering the Maternal and Child Health Centre
- Social distancing of 1.5 meters in the waiting room and consultation room must be adhered to

Universal Maternal Child Health Service (UMCH)
The UMCH program consists of 10 KAS (Key Age and Stage) consultations with a maternal and child health nurse. The KAS consultations are a schedule of contacts for all children and their families from birth to school age. They include an initial home visit, and consultations at two, four and eight weeks, and four, eight, 12 and 18 months, and at two and three and a half years of age.
The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Service is a free health service available for all families within the Stonnington municipality with children from birth to school age. This service is staffed by registered nurses with midwifery and maternal and child health nursing qualifications.
To make an appointment, please call our MCH Services central booking officer on 8290 3336. Our service is easy to access, family focused and committed to providing the highest quality of service. An interpreter service is available and confidentiality is maintained at all times.
How MCH can help parents, families and carers
MCH provides information, guidance and support on the following topics:
- child health and development
- parent child relationships
- maternal and family health
- breastfeeding and infant feeding advice
- information on local support services
- safety and injury prevention, and
- new parent group sessions.
The MCH app provides time-saving features such as personalised notifications, important contact numbers (such as the MCH Line), and evidence-informed responses to common child health, wellbeing, safety learning and development questions. It provides information for parents about KAS consultations and reliable online information on parenting topics.
The MCH app includes an interactive child growth tracker, enabling families to monitor their baby’s growth progress. In addition, the app’s content continues to be translated into community languages to promote access for culturally and linguistically diverse families.
The MCH app is also available in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Dari, Khmer, Persian, Punjabi, Spanish and Vietnamese. Download the MCH app on the iOS App Store or Google Play Store.
The MCH Line program
The MCH Line is a 24-hour telephone service supporting Victorian families with health and parenting concerns for children from birth to school age, staffed by MCH nurses. The MCH Line links families to the UMCH and EMCH programs and offers assisted referrals to a range of health and family support services, including emergency services.

Child health and development assessments at key ages and stages
Health and development assessments are available with a nurse for newborns and at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years and 3.5 to 4 years.
The My Health, Learning and Development book (the Green book) is given to the parents of every newborn child in Victoria. It includes information about services that support families, your child’s growth and health record, appointments and immunisation records. Please bring The Green book with you to every MCH visit.
Enhanced Maternal and Child Health service (EMCH)
The EMCH program responds assertively to the needs of children and families at risk of poor outcomes, in particular where there are multiple risk factors. This service is provided in addition to the components offered through the UMCH program.
First-time parent groups
First-time parent group (FTPG) sessions provide health promotion and prevention, build parenting capacity, offer parenting support and enhance social engagement and community connections and support active engagement and inclusive practice of fathers and carers. Contact your local MCH centre for details.
3.5 year assessments
Stonnington Maternal & Child Health Service is offering 3.5 year assessments at your child care centre for parents who are unable to attend a Maternal & Child Health Centre.
Complete our online form you would like your child to be assessed at childcare.
Parents are welcome to come along to the assessment. When this is not possible, other family members or caregivers (ie childcare staff) can be present. We will contact you by telephone or email to discuss any issues which may arise.
Please bring your child’s My Health Learning & Development Record (green book) on the day of assessment.
Parent education sessions
We offer developmental assessments for children between three-and-a-half and four years. The assessment covers:
- Fine and gross motor skills
- Social and emotional development
- Language development
- Vision screening
- Discussion on behaviour, nutrition, play, immunisation, parenting and any concerns

Preschool dental service
Our preschool dental service is for children up to six years of age and is provided by Star Health. It provides:
- Dental screening for preschool children who live or attend childcare or preschool in Stonnington
- Dental education for parents and carers of preschool children living or attending childcare or preschool in Stonnington
