Keep your fruit safe from wildlife and wildlife safe from your fruit nets

Did you know that some types of fruit tree netting are illegal to use in Victorian households due to the dangers they pose to our native wildlife?

It’s illegal in Victoria to use or sell household fruit tree netting with a mesh size bigger than 5mm x 5mm. Larger mesh netting is more likely to entangle, distress, and seriously injure or kill animals. To check if netting is legal, try poking a small finger through the mesh and if it can pass through, then it’s too big.

As part of Victoria's Net Swap Program you can swap your old nets for new netting for free. The surrendered fruit nets will then be responsibly recycled by UPPAREL, avoiding further entanglements in landfill sites.

We are holding two fruit tree net swaps for Stonnington residents throughout October.

  • Swap 1: Winter St park, Malvern. Saturday 10th October, 10am - 2pm. Book your swap.
  • Swap 2: Toorak South Yarra Library. Tuesday 27th October, 10:30am - 2pm. Book your swap

The Net Swap Program is delivered by the Conservation Regulator in partnership with participating Victorian councils.
