From 2026, we are trialling a speed limit of 30km/h in selected streets across Stonnington. We chose streets that are known road safety hotspots, informed by community requests and our Road Safety Strategy(PDF, 5MB).

The trial will run for 18 months from the installation of new 30km/h signs in the affected areas.

A survey on our Connect Stonnington Engagement hub will collect community feedback on the reduced speed limit following installation of the new 30km/h signs.

This initiative forms part of our Road Safety Improvement Program which delivers measures to improve road safety. It aligns with Council's Transport and Road Safety Strategy and supports the Victorian Government's target to halve fatal and serious injury crashes by 2030, and state and national targets to reduce road deaths to zero by 2050.

At the close of the 18-month trial we will make a recommendation to the Department of Transport and Planning on whether the 30km/h limit will remain in some or all of the trial streets. This will be informed by considering traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and crash occurrence data as well as community feedback.

Consultation

2026 Consultation

A survey about the 30km/h trial will collect community feedback on the reduced speed limit following installation of the new 30km/h signs.

The survey will run during the 18-month trial.

2024 Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including trialling a reduced speed limit of 30km/h in selected streets in Armadale, Prahran, South Yarra, Toorak and Windsor.
