Armadale Station precinct road safety improvements

In 2026, we will deliver a series of road safety improvements within the Armadale Station precinct - to make the local streets safer and more inviting for residents and visitors to this vibrant area.

Fully funded by the Victorian Government, the road safety improvement works include changing Morey Street (from Kooyong Road to Kingsway) and Kingsway (from Morey Street to Kings Arcade) to a ‘shared zone’ that prioritises people and safety.

The 10km/h ‘shared zone’ can be used by pedestrians and vehicles. It prioritises people over cars and is where people walking and riding a bike can feel safe moving around this busy retail and station precinct.

To establish the ‘shared zone’ we will remove one parking space and create an area for pedestrians to stand next to the Armadale Station steps - to improve the sightlines when crossing from the station to Kingway.

We will also remove up to two Morey Street parking spaces between Kooyong Road and Kingsway to accommodate pedestrian and cyclist refuge points. New 10km/h ‘shared zone’  signs will also be installed on Morey Street.

These works will be complemented by the installation of two raised pedestrian crossings – the first on Morey Street at the Kooyong Road intersection and the second on Union Street at the Kooyong Road intersection. These platforms give priority to pedestrians accessing the train station, bus stop and local shops.

Raised crossings improve accessibility and pedestrian safety by slowing vehicles and making people walking more visible to drivers.

These works prioritise pedestrian and bike rider safety and deliver on Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer streets for everyone.

Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including the following within the Armadale Station precinct:

  • Converting Morey Street into a shared zone from Kooyong Road to Kingsway
  • Converting Kingway into a shared zone from Morey Street to Kings Arcade
  • Constructing a raised pedestrian crossing at the Morey/Kooyong intersection
  • Constructing a raised pedestrian crossing at the Union/Kooyong intersection
