In 2026, we will construct two raised pedestrian crossings in South Yarra – one on Osborne Street at the Toorak Road intersection and the second on Darling Street at the Toorak Road intersection.

Fully funded by the Victorian Government, these road safety improvement works will enhance accessibility and pedestrian safety by slowing vehicles and making people walking more visible to drivers.

When constructing the Osborne Street raised pedestrian crossing we will also extend the Toorak Road bike lane. No changes will be made to parking and all existing trees and street furniture will remain.

The Darling Street crossing works require no changes to parking, however bins and wayfinding signs will be relocated.

These works prioritise pedestrian safety and deliver on Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer streets for everyone.

Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including constructing two raised pedestrian crossings in South Yarra - on Darling Street at the Toorak Road intersection and on Osborne Street at the Toorak Road intersection.
