In 2026, we will construct a raised pedestrian crossing on Hampden Road at the intersection with Avondale Road in Armadale.

Fully funded by the Victorian Government, this road safety improvement project will improve accessibility and pedestrian safety by slowing vehicles and making people walking more visible to drivers.

The works will include realigning the Hampden Road kerb to narrow the crossing distance for pedestrians and encouraging slower vehicle speeds when approaching the intersection.

These works prioritise pedestrian safety and deliver on Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer streets for everyone.

Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including constructing a raised pedestrian crossing on Hampden Road at the corner of Avondale Road in Armadale.

For more on the consultation view the Road Safety Improvement Program on the Connect Stonnington engagement hub.
