In 2026, we will construct a raised pedestrian crossing on Porter Street at the intersection with High Street in Prahran.

Fully funded by the Victorian Government, this road safety improvement project will improve accessibility and pedestrian safety by slowing vehicles and making people walking more visible to drivers.

The works will include extending the Porter Street footpath to narrow the crossing distance for pedestrians and encouraging slower vehicle speeds when approaching the intersection.

The existing three vehicle lanes at the Porter Street/High Street intersection will reduced to one in keeping with the low traffic numbers on Porter Street. By narrowing the current wide crossing distance we will improve safety and prioritise pedestrians crossing this busy intersection to access Prahran Railway Station, the Route 6 tram stop and local High Street shops.

An existing tree will be retained and option to add more trees and seating investigated. It’s proposed to add three parking spaces on the west side of Porter Street offsetting the lose of one space on the east side of the street. One of the new parking spaces will be allocated to car share use aligning with feedback received during a consultation in September 2025.

These works prioritise pedestrian safety and deliver on Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer streets for everyone.

Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including constructing a raised pedestrian crossing on Porter Street at the corner of High Street in Prahran.

For more on the consultation view the Road Safety Improvement Program on the Connect Stonnington engagement portal.
