In 2026, we're upgrading The Avenue/Dandenong Road intersection to improve pedestrian and bike rider safety.

Fully funded by the Victorian Government, the project will improve safety by reallocating one existing traffic lane as a dedicated bike lane and refuge island, so bike riders travelling south to St Kilda East can use the lane to safely cross Dandenong Road at the signalised intersection.

The Avenue is part of the two-kilometre cycling corridor between Toorak and Dandenong roads and is a popular alternative for bike riders wanting to avoid riding along much busier Chapel Street or Williams Road.

The project will require the removal of one parking space and will also benefit people walking by making it safer and easier to cross fewer traffic lanes at this busy intersection.

These works prioritise pedestrian and bike rider safety and deliver on Council’s ongoing commitment to creating safer streets for everyone.

Consultation

In late 2024, we consulted the Stonnington community on a proposed road safety improvement program (RSIP) designed to create safer streets for everyone where people are comfortable to walk, ride, connect with others and feel safe.

The suite of RSIP initiatives was informed by community requests, our Road Safety Strategy and known road safety hotspots.

Following the consultation and consideration of community feedback, Council endorsed a range of road safety improvement projects in June 2025, including upgrading the intersection of The Avenue and Dandenong Road to make it safer for bike riders and pedestrians.
