Flower Studies, Mysterious Al

About the artist

Mysterious Al is a contemporary artist renowned for putting on art exhibitions in unusual locations; including derelict warehouses, old factories, disused shop fronts and a fairground ghost train.

Al rose to fame in the early 2000’s through the explosion of street art, developing a notoriety for his wall paintings, paste-ups and street installations alongside his contemporaries D*face, Banksy and PMH.

“Although there’s a lot of spontaneity and energy in my work, I draw reference from a rich history of method and colour. I like the practice of taking shapes and marks that are created spontaneously and wrangling them into line. Making order out of chaos”.

About the work

The interior murals at Greville Street Library are the first of Al’s new, narrative-based works. Whilst maintaining a fun, playful style, the pieces have a darker undertone. A lost Airpod hides amongst the flowers. Nature grapples with city litter, and colourful faces look at first glance happy. But look closer: there's always something behind a smile.

Flower Studies was commissioned as part of Stonnington’s Frameworks: A public art mural program which is guided by our Creative Stonnington Strategy and can be seen at the Greville Street Library (180 Greville Street), Prahran.
