Drop off waste and recycling at the Waste Transfer Station

You can visit the Waste Transfer Station to drop-off many types of waste and recycling items that can't go in your bins at home, as well as garden organics.

About the Waste Transfer Station

Why is it called a Waste Transfer Station instead of a tip?

We no longer refer to the waste transfer station as a tip because it is so much more than that.

With improvements in waste management, we can effectively sort general waste and recyclables from different sources for transporting to recycling recovery facilities and waste processors, reducing what goes to landfill.

Why sorting your rubbish matters

If we allow general waste and recyclables to be mixed together, the materials that could have been recovered become contaminated and end up in our state's landfills, rather than being recovered and turned into new products.

Please sort your waste and place it in the correct areas when you visit. This helps reduce costs and supports a more sustainable Stonnington.

Planning your visit

To make the most of your visit, please ensure you consider the following:

  • Check your items are accepted: we do not accept hazardous materials. This includes chemicals, asbestos and domestic garbage.
  • Bring proof of resident or ratepayer status: accepted ID includes your driver's licence, rates notice or recent utility bill. If proof of ID is not shown, non-residential fees will apply.
  • Payment: EFTPOS, credit card and cash accepted. We do not accept AMEX.
  • Hours: Check opening hours before you travel.
  • For large amounts of waste: please ensure you arrive 30 minutes before closing time.
  • At the Waste Transfer Station: Please remove any tarps so the window operator can view the load.

Accepted items and fees

Fees depend on:

  • whether you're a resident or not
  • the type of waste
  • the vehicle you bring it in.

Use the below fees as a guide only. The weighbridge operator will let you know the final fee when you arrive.

Fees are changed based on whether the load is level with the side of the trailer or less. You'll be charged per cubic metre for a bigger load or caged trailers.
