Identity + Design, with Danielle Brustman
Artist and interior designer Danielle Brustman explores the subtle yet powerful ways culture, place, and community shape creative practice. Drawing on her multidisciplinary work across interiors, objects, and installation, she reflects on how family history, cultural identity, and lived experience become embedded in the spaces we design and inhabit.
Through personal insight and professional practice, she considers how memory, migration, and material culture inform aesthetic decisions and spatial storytelling. This intimate talk offers a thoughtful reflection on design as a vessel for identity, where interiors become more than spaces, but layered expressions of who we are and where we come from.
Danielle Brustman's Melbourne based studio encompasses a broad spectrum of practice, from residential interiors and commercial design for the hospitality, education and retail sectors along with furniture and lighting design for exhibition and installation.
Known for her sophisticated use of colour and geometric references, Brustman’s narrative driven work draws on both historical and contemporary influences to create striking spaces and objects.
Represented by Sophie Gannon Gallery and Useful Object Gallery, Brustman’s design pieces and installations have featured in several major exhibitions and awards including : the Rigg Design Prize NGV (2018), Local Milan, Milan Design Week (2019), NGV Triennial (2020) , Melbourne Now NGV (2023), I could have danced all night, Jewish Museum of Australia (2024) and Lets Party – Fashion for Kids NGV (2025).
