We’re joining councils across the state by rolling out a Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin to households across Stonnington.  The rollout will take place in two stages.

The first stage occurs later this year, as we start to deliver green-lidded FOGO bins and caddies across Stonnington to eligible standalone properties including houses and some townhouses (who do not already have a FOGO bin). We will send letters with further details to all these properties.

The second stage will be announced in 2026 and will be aimed at apartment and unit blocks.

As part of the rollout we will be running a series of information and drop in sessions from October through November.

Cost and collection

After your FOGO bin is delivered, you will receive a pro-rata rates notice. This year’s charge for a 120 L FOGO bin is $90. The waste charges are determined every year as part of Council’s annual budget.

FOGO and recycling bins will continue to be collected fortnightly, and garbage bins weekly.

Opting out

Some household may opt-out of this FOGO bin rollout. Applications will be accepted until Tuesday 30 September 2025.

How FOGO helps the environment and our budget

By using your FOGO bin for all your food scraps and garden organics, you are directly helping to support the creation of nutrient-rich compost for local farms, parks and gardens.

Diverting food and garden organics from landfill not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also significantly reduces waste disposal costs. As landfill fees continue to rise, every tonne of waste we divert through FOGO means more money saved for ratepayers.

Once you have your new FOGO bin, you can start saving your scraps straight away by using your kitchen caddy. You can line your caddy with newspaper or collect a FREE roll of compostable lime green liners from one of our customer service centers.
