Our sustainability and climate commitments

New Environment Strategy: Shaping a sustainable and resilient tomorrow

We are committed to pursuing environmental sustainability and climate change action.

We’re creating a new Environment Strategy to guide our sustainability and climate action efforts for the next 15 years. It will build on the progress we’ve already made together and aligns with our Community Vision. You can have your say in our online survey or prioritisation activity, or attend pop-up event held in several locations across Stonnington. Consultation closes 1 March 2026.

A core direction of our new Community Vision and Council Plan – Stonnington Tomorrow –  is creating a sustainable environment. This means working together to respond to urgent challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss by drawing on local knowledge, creativity and commitment.

Our current strategies and action plans

Council's existing environmental strategies include:

Urban Forest Strategy 2017-2022

The Urban Forest Strategy(PDF, 6MB) seeks to achieve the following outcomes:

  • Increased vegetation cover
  • Improved health and quality of the urban forest
  • Greater resilience to a changing climate
  • Reduced urban heat island effect
  • Enhanced amenity and liveability

Sustainable Environment Strategy 2018 - 2023

Our Sustainable Environment Strategy 2018 - 2023 supports the Council Plan and outlines our objectives, targets and actions across five priority areas:

  • Climate change and energy
  • Resources and waste management
  • Integrated water management
  • Urban environment
  • Education, engagement and collaboration

Towards Zero Carbon: Our Climate Emergency Action Plan 2021 - 2024

Council declared a climate emergency on 20 February 2020, recognising that urgent action is required by all levels of government, including local councils to act on mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Our Climate Emergency Action Plan 2021 - 2024 outlines our pathway towards a zero carbon Stonnington 2030 and a climate-ready future for our city.

Our commitment is framed around an overarching principle of leadership and three strategic priorities that will work to reduce emissions and adapt to our changing climate:

Towards a Circular Economy: Our Future Waste Strategy 2022-2025

Our Towards a circular economy: Our future waste strategy 2022–2025(PDF, 8MB) will guide how we manage waste and move towards a circular system – with priorities and actions to help us avoid, reduce, reuse - and keep as much waste out of landfill as possible.

Rather than renewing each document separately, we’re bringing all priorities together into one overarching and long-term strategy supported by short-term action plans. This aligns with Council’s decision to elevate Sustainable Environment as a key direction in the new Council Plan 2025–2029.

Retiring these strategies does not change Council’s climate emergency declaration, net zero target, or existing commitments. We believe integrated challenges need integrated solutions, and one cohesive strategy will help streamline and strengthen our environmental action.

What we've achieved since our last Environment Strategy

Stonnington has come a long way over the past seven years since the launch of our last Environment Strategy. See what we have done so far to support shaping a sustainable and resilient tomorrow for Stonnington, together.

Plans, assessments and corporate measures

We’ve committed to action on climate and environment over the last seven years through the following:

  • declared a climate emergency, created our first Climate Emergency Action Plan, and expanded our Climate and Sustainability team
  • completed a climate vulnerability assessment of the Chapel Street precinct
  • reduced our corporate emissions by 82% since our 2005 baseline year
  • created our first Nature Strip Planting Policy in 2024 and issued 18 permits allowing our community to use their nature strips to increase biodiversity
  • launched our first Towards Zero Waste Strategy, focusing Council’s efforts on viewing waste as a resource, and expanded our Waste Strategy & Engagement team.

Community support

Over the last seven years, we’ve directly supported our community to care for the environment and reduce emissions by:

  • reducing community emissions by 14% since 2018
  • installing 1,181 kW of solar across more than 40 facilities, along with two batteries
  • securing over $1,000,000 in grant funding for environmental projects
  • creating Home Energy Efficiency Kits, which have been borrowed more than 200 times from Stonnington libraries
  • reducing annual water use by an average of 9%
  • recording 6,811 community observations of local flora and fauna via the citizen science app iNaturalist
  • delivering 19 school planting days
  • delivering six Native Plant Giveaway events, with more than 7,000 plants adopted by residents
  • delivering over 300 sustainability and waste education events at schools and early learning centres
  • delivering more than 150 environmental and waste events and webinars to over 18,000 community attendees
  • delivering four terms of the Environmental Champions program, with 56 community graduates
  • joining the award-winning My Smart Garden and Solar Savers programs
  • publishing over 80 editions of the Sustainable Stonnington e-newsletter to almost 3,000 subscribers.

Green spaces

We’ve worked to preserve and grow our green spaces over the last seven years by:

  • restoring all three of Stonnington’s wetlands and the ponds at the Urban Forest
  • delivering 211 new water sensitive urban design (WSUD) assets, including raingardens, passive irrigation tree pits and permeable paving
  • completing the Yarra River Biodiversity Project, transforming 34,199 m² of previously under-loved parkland along the Birrarung’s Main Yarra Trail
  • developing the Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) Masterplan and helping to establish the Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) Regional Collaboration to improve the creek’s condition and environmental outcomes
  • deepening relationships with our Traditional Custodians to better embed Caring for Country principles in the management of our natural environment
  • planting over 10,000 trees and 77,000 native plants across streetscapes, parks and gardens.

Waste and recycling

Over the past seven years, we’ve built sustainability into our waste system by:

  • launching our first bin feedback program, checking almost 12,000 bins to reduce contamination and improve recycling outcomes
  • expanding the kerbside green waste service to accept food waste and launching food waste drop-offs, diverting over 31,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill.

Sustainability Snapshots

Each year we report on our progress through our Sustainability Snapshot.

During the lifespan of the Sustainable Environment Strategy 2018-2023, we reported on our progress through our Sustainability Snapshot.

In lieu of Sustainability Snapshots covering 2023-2026, you can read about our highlights and key successes in the “What we’ve achieved since our last Environment Strategy” section above.

We will also be summarising our highlights and key successes as part of the refresh of our Environment Strategy, which is currently underway. Progress against key targets and indicators, as well as key achievements, are also published each year in Council’s Annual Report
