Subsidies

Clean and efficient energy should be for everyone. We know some households need support to upgrade their homes and reduce their power bills.

You can now access Council subsidies via our partners at Solar Savers to:

  • upgrade to new efficient electric appliances
  • get solar power
  • draught-proof and insulate your home.

Energy Insights – subsidised home energy assessments

Find out how energy-efficient your home is and what upgrades will help most to reduce energy bills, improve comfort, and shrink your home’s environmental footprint.

  • 75% discount if you have a concession card
  • 50% discount for all other Stonnington households

What’s involved?

After you book with Solar Savers, a qualified assessor will visit your home. They will look at things like:

  • how much power your appliances use
  • whether hot water or heating systems need upgrading
  • possible gaps in your insulation
  • draughts around windows, doors, lighting, curtains and blinds.

You will receive a report with next steps you can take. This includes including small and affordable changes, and bigger upgrades that may cost more up front but will improve comfort and save money in the long-term.

If you need support to pay for upgrades, you can apply for Council’s Energy for Everyone subsidy.

Energy for Everyone – help with upgrades

It’s important to us that all households in Stonnington can heat and cool their homes affordably and sustainably. We can provide financial assistance to help you pay for upgrades recommended in the energy assessment.

Subsidies available

We are offering up to $2,500 (excluding GST) per eligible household in subsidies for upgrades recommended in home energy assessments. If the assessor recommends multiple upgrades, we’ll prioritise subsidies according to highest impact for the lowest cost. Upgrades we’re helping to fund include:

  • insulation and draught proofing
  • efficient split system heating and cooling units
  • heat pump hot water systems
  • induction cooktops
  • solar panels and batteries
  • EV chargers.

The Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) program requires the following minimum household co-payments:

  • $200 (including GST) for hot water heat pumps
  • $1,000 (including GST) for some larger split systems

In some cases, residents may not be able to receive the full $2,500 subsidy.

Eligibility

Upgrading your home can be expensive, even if you know you will save money in the long-term. We know that some households need support to make upgrades. Our Energy for Everyone subsidy provides for home energy upgrades to:

  • Concession card holders
  • low- and middle-income households
  • people living with disabilities
  • members of Stonnington’s cultural and linguistically diverse communities
  • renters
  • social housing residents
  • members of Stonnington’s First Peoples community
  • older people (65+)
  • apartment residents.

If you do not meet the eligibility criteria

If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, you can still benefit from using Solar Savers. They will guide you through the process of applying for government subsidies and provide quotes from vetted suppliers. You can also access a home energy assessment, energy efficient appliances, draught proofing and insulation.

Please note the following:

  • We use the Planning and Environment Act 1987 (Vic) income ranges to determine which your income bracket.
  • We need written approval from the property manager or owner for any upgrades to rental properties.
  • We need written approval from the housing provider for any upgrades to social housing properties.
  • Residents of Victorian Government-owned public housing are not eligible.
  • For some apartment upgrades, we need written approval from the owners corporation.

SunShare for apartments

Living in an apartment no longer means missing out on solar!

Our ‘Sun Share’ subsidy offers owners corporations of eligible buildings up to $1,000 per apartment towards the cost of shared solar PV systems. This is in addition to the Victorian Government’s Solar for Apartments rebate, helping reduce costs further.

To help navigate the process and connect you with quality installers, we’ve partnered with Solar Savers.

They’ll work directly with your owners corporation throughout the entire process, from sourcing quotes through to finalising installation.

Why consider shared solar?

The benefits of shared solar include:

  • a fair split of solar energy between apartments
  • lower electricity bills
  • a more comfortable, future-ready building
  • cleaner energy with lower emissions.

Who is the subsidy for?

Owners, residents and owners corporations of eligible apartments in Stonnington (5 to 50 units).

How it works

  1. Check your eligibility and access helpful resources on the Solar Savers website.
  2. Gather support from your neighbours and owners corporation.
  3. Apply for the Sun Share subsidy via the Solar Savers website.
