About the Commonwealth Government aged care system

My Aged Care is the starting point for persons aged 65 years and over to access Australian Government-funded aged care services (50 years or older for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people).

It provides information on:

  • how to get an assessment to determine your eligibility for services
  • referrals and support to find service providers that meet your needs.

Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am to 2 pm Saturdays.

The government understands that circumstances change and additional support is part of the ageing process. If you receive Commonwealth-funded aged services and feel you may need more support, contact My Aged Care to discuss a reassessment of your services.

Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN)

The OPAN program provides free and confidential information to older people seeking or receiving government-funded aged care, as well as their families or supporters. It is an Australian Government-funded program.

OPAN can help you to:

  • understand and exercise your aged care rights
  • find aged care services that meet your needs
  • resolve issues with government-funded aged care providers.

Carer Gateway

Carer Gateway is an Australian Government-funded program that provides free support for carers. They can help with respite care and emergency respite care services.

Under 65 years and not receiving NDIS support?

Mecwacare provides support services to people 65 years and younger, under the Home and Community Care Younger Persons Program (HACC PYP).

The program supports people who are not in receipt of NDIS to live at home as independently as possible.
