How to register a new pet
Prepare your documents
Before you start the registration process, make sure you have the following:
- Microchipping certificate provided by the applicable pet registry, including your pet's microchip number and your name.
- Desexing certificate if registering a desexed dog. Desexing is required for all cats, unless exempt.
- Adoption papers. Current year accepted only from a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation
- Current council registration. If you have moved councils in the last 12 months, you must provide a paid invoice for the current animal registration year.
- Additional supporting documentation such as obedience or training certificates, proof of pensioner eligibility, etc.
Register your pet online
Log in to the platform to register your pet. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up. Find out more about our online self-service platform.
Once logged in:
- select ‘Pet registration' under Apply for something
- follow the prompts.
Register a new pet
You can track the progress of your applications anytime through the platform.
If you're unable to register online, complete the animal registration form(PDF, 489KB) and bring it to one of our service centres to pay in person.
Pay the fee
Pay the required fee to complete your registration.
You may qualify for a reduced fee if you can provide any of the following:
- Proof of desexing
- Proof of purchase from a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation
- Current proof of registration from another council
- Accredited obedience training documentation (not puppy school)
- Guide / Hearing / Assistance Dog documentation
- Proof of pensioner status.

You will need to pay when submitting the form. Please ensure you have your card details ready.
Receive your pet tag
Once your pet is registered, you will receive a Council-issued tag. If registering online, you will receive the tag via post. If registering at one of our service centres, you will receive the tag in person.
Renew your registration every year
Once your pet is registered with us, you will need to renew your registration by 10 April each year. You will receive your renewal notice via mail or email by March.
To renew your pet registration online, visit your online banking website and pay with the Bpay biller code and reference in your renewal notice.
