Tactile bin lid symbols

We want everyone in our community to be able to sort their waste easily and confidently.

Tactile bin lid symbols are raised shapes attached to the top of your bin lid.

About tactile bin lid symbols

Tactile symbols are designed for residents who are blind or have low vision, as well as for carers and support workers. The symbols were developed in consultation with Vision Australia and Blind Citizens Australia.

This ensures they are clear, recognisable and practical to use.

Implementing tactile bin lid symbols helps to:

  • improve accessibility and independence

  • make it easier to use the correct bin

  • help reduce contamination in recycling and FOGO bins.

How the symbols work

Each bin has a different shape: Square: General rubbish

  • Square: General rubbish

  • Triangle: Recycling

  • Circle: Food and garden waste (FOGO)

The symbols are solid, easy to feel, and securely attached to the lid.

They help residents who are blind or have low vision identify each bin by touch, making it easier to sort waste correctly and independently.

The symbols are made from recycled plastic, created by Precious Plastics at Monash University. This supports a circular economy by reusing materials while improving accessibility.
