Trialling 30 kmph speed limits in Stonnington
Published on 01 September 2026
From Monday 19 October, we’ll be trialling 30 km/h speed limit across 12 local areas in Stonnington.

Why we’re trialling lower speed limits
When people are travelling in different ways, unexpected moments can happen quickly - such as a child crossing the street on their way to school or a bike rider moving around an obstacle.
Speed can affect what happens in these moments. Lower speeds give everyone more time to see, respond and stop safely and reduce the severity of a crash if one occurs. Research shows that a person walking who is hit by a vehicle travelling at 30 km/h has around a 90% chance of surviving. At 50 km/h, the chance drops to around 10%.
These figures show why we're looking closely at road safety on local streets. In Stonnington, more than 1,500 crashes were recorded between 2000 and 2024, including 7 fatalities and 564 serious injuries. People walking, cycling or riding motorcycles were involved in 60% of fatal and serious injury crashes.
By trialling a lower speed limit, we can gather local information about how lower speeds may affect safety and travel for people using these streets.

How we will evaluate the trial
Over the 18-month trial, we’ll look at:
- the number of vehicles, bike riders and pedestrians using the street
- vehicle and cyclist speeds
- the number of interactions and near misses
- feedback and experiences through community surveys.
The information we gather from the community, alongside the traffic data, will help guide future decisions about local street safety.
