Alfred Hitchcock's "Blackmail"

Alfred Hitchcock's 1929 Silent Film

Join us for a special screening of "Blackmail", one of Alfred Hitchcock’s earliest thrillers and a landmark of British cinema.

Made at the moment film was transitioning from silent to sound, Blackmail was released in both formats. For this event, Melbourne Theatre Organ presents the original silent version, brought to life with live theatre organ accompaniment – just as audiences experienced it at the time.

A tense story of crime, guilt and secrets, the film showcases Hitchcock’s emerging mastery of suspense and visual storytelling, from shadowy London streets to its famous British Museum climax.

The event features:

  • live theatre pipe organ and commentary
  • acclaimed silent film accompanist David Bailey on the Compton theatre organ
  • film reviewer and presenter Madeleine “At the Movies” Swain introducing the screening.

Please note: This is a dark suspense drama with mature themes and may not be suitable for young children.
