River Bloom

River Bloom is jewellery for Birrarung - consisting of over 3,000 tennis balls, collected from the river.

Like oversized jewellery beads, the balls have been tinted and etched by Birrarung different shades of green to brown, as a measure of how long they have been in the river. Graded and strung together the strands will be assembled to craft giant jewellery for the river. Like an algae bloom, the tennis balls are toxic, a single use human manufactured and discarded object. So different to Birrarung’s glorious yellow blossom that lines the water edges when the wattle blooms.

Beautiful and shocking the artwork aims to inspire an awareness of the impact of Naarm’s stormwater run-off on Birrarung.

This event is part of the Birrarung Riverfest.
