In Australia, one in five people live with disability. Join us on Wednesday 3 December as we recognise International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) and help us make our community accessible, fair and equitable for all residents.
IDPwD provides an opportunity to listen to the experiences of people with disability, to reflect on our attitudes and behaviours and shift the conversation around disability.
We're hosting several activities to coincide with IDPwD.
We’re inviting writers with disability from the Cities of Stonnington, Kingston and Bayside to join our free creative writing workshops, presented as part of Writers Victoria’s acclaimed Writeability Goes Local program.
Over four monthly workshops starting 3 December, experienced writing mentor Ruby Hillsmith will provide the tools and information to support creative people with disability who want to tell their own stories in their own way. This program is open to writers with all levels of experience.
Also on 3 December, Vision Australia is hosting a Storytime session at Toorak/South Yarra Library for children aged two to five years. This session, with Feelix kits, tactile song sheets and songs, will help children discover the world around them as we read aloud stories, look at picture books, and sing action songs and rhymes. This event is open to all children.
We’re also continuing to distribute free Hidden Disability Sunflower merchandise at our customer service centres and libraries.
By choosing to wear sunflower merchandise, you can discreetly communicate to our trained staff and the community that you might need extra time, support, assistance or understanding. Approximately 80 to 85 per cent of disabilities are not immediately apparent.
If you have a hidden disability, collect your Hidden Disability Sunflower badge, lanyard or wristband today.
