Victoria Gardens are nestled between High and Murray streets in Prahran. Set over two hectares, the gardens are a green oasis away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Please note: The sunken garden is the only area within Victoria Gardens designated for dog off-leash exercise. Please ensure you observe and comply with the dog on- and off-leash signs, and maintain control of your dog at all times.
History of the gardens
First purchased by the then Prahran Council in 1884, the Gardens were formally opened in 1885 by Lady Lock (wife of the then Governor of what was the British Colony of Victoria).
Victoria Gardens were designed by landscaper William Sangter (best known for this work at Como House, Rippon Lea and the Daylesford Botanic Gardens).
Some 135 years on Victoria Gardens stand as testament to the ongoing commitment of the local community and Council to enhance and maintain the social and historical significance of these beautiful gardens.
- RSL memorial (recently upgraded) - a focal point for ANZAC day commemorations
- Lumley children's playground - originally created via the private Lumley Trust. This playground has been improved with accessible play elements such as basket swings with rubber matting.
- 19th century decorative features and seating - many donated by the local community.
- Sign at the High Street entrance detailing a short history to the gardens and graphic representations of some of the significant trees planted many years ago.
Friends of Victoria Gardens
In 1987, Friends of Victoria Gardens Inc was established and the group continues to play a major role in supporting the care and enhancement of this significant historic garden.
