Pet registration

Victorian legislation requires that all dogs and cats older than three months must be microchipped and registered with their local council.

Prepare your certificates

Ensure you have a digital copy of the relevant documents and certificates, such as proof of microchipping and desexing (if applicable).

Register and pay

Your fees will be calculated for you automatically. Please ensure you have a credit card to pay and finalise your registration online.

Alternatively, complete the animal registration form(PDF, 291KB) and bring it to one of our service centres to pay via cheque, credit card or EFTPOS.

Subsidised fee for pets adopted from welfare organisations

If you provide proof of purchase of your pet from a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation, you will receive a first-time subsidised registration fee of $5.

Full fees will apply for the following registration period, which begins on 10 April each year.

Registration renewal payments must be made by 10 April each year. Failure to pay the fee on time may result in a substantial fine.

Fees

Reduced fees apply when proof of the following is provided:

  • desexed (Cat desexing is compulsory in Stonnington. Exemptions will only be made for cats for registered breeding purposes or due to veterinary advice.)
  • dogs trained by an approved obedience trainer
  • more than ten years of age
  • part of a Domestic Animal Business or applicable organisation.

Otherwise, full fees apply.

Concession

If you wish to claim a concession you must supply proof of your current Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card or Department of Veteran Affairs Pensioner Concession Card.

Refunds

Refunds for desexed pets will only be provided for pets desexed before 10 October each year or within six months of initial registration (proof required).

Please note that after 10 October each year, no refunds will be provided for deceased pets or pets that have moved outside the municipality for that registration period.

Updating your details

Please make sure your details are up-to-date with Council if:

  • you have moved house to another location in Stonnington
  • you have moved out of the municipality
  • you have moved from a different municipality within Victoria
  • your pet is deceased or no longer owned by you.
